Seychelles Attributes Income Loss to Piracy

Seychelles’ Ambassador to the United Nations said his country lost about 4 percent of its GDP last year due to piracy.

Ronny Jumeau said piracy activity in the Indian Ocean is set to increase towards the end of this month once Southeast Monsoon fades down.

In an interview with VOA Somali Service, Mr. Jumeau said that his country will take a lead role in combating piracy by trying pirates in their courts. Seychelles has already tried and convicted 11 pirates in July this year. 29 other suspects are waiting trail.
